Searching the AG Contents

The basics
To use this search, think about what words, names etc. you're looking for. Type these words into the empty box, and click on the Search! button. That will do most of what you want: the information following is for people who aren't finding what they want, or who need to refine their searches.

If you type several words into the search box, the search program will try to find magazine issues with ALL the words listed. That is, it assumes there's an AND between the search words. If you're happy to find issues with just some of the search words, you can put OR between them.

The search program also understands brackets (for grouping your search terms) and NOT, for excluding some results. For example, you could search for Bradney and not Maurie.

If you want to search for a phrase (several words in sequence), put quotes around your search terms. Unless you do this, the search program looks for all the words separately.

Normally the search program shows the best search result first. (What it thinks is the best result anyhow!) That's what "Best match first" means. You might prefer to see the results in order of date of publication: if so, select "Oldest First" before you click the Search button. You can reverse these orderings by putting a tick in the "Reverse order" box: this could show you the results "newest articles first".

If you want to search for words that start with a sequence, type a * after the sequence. For instance, if you wanted your search to match "gliders", "glider" and "gliding", you would type in: glid* This can help if you're not sure about spelling or word endings.

The search program thinks UPPER CASE and lower case are the same. It doesn't mind searching for numbers and some other characters, but it's usually best to limit your search to letters and numbers.

If you're not finding what you expect, here are some things to try:

• search for words with similar meaning or different spelling,
• shorten the search words and put * on the end.
